last weekend sam cleared the "communal garden"space outside our flat and planted lots of shrubs, bulbs, lilies, daffodils, herbs, roses .. and a pear tree! above is the view from our kitchen window.. and sam clearing all the leaves and debris..

lunch break...

as you can see in this photo the area is a path leading up beside the house from the road. but it is not used too much. You can see our back door in the right of this picture.

the next step is to plant grass seed on the bit behind where sam is sitting so that we have a little bit of lawn. i'll take some finished product photos as it is is looking lovely. i love leaving in the morning and walking past all the plants.. including a hanging basket of flowers outside the back door.

motherhood

i have been thinking a lot lately about becoming a mother - in approximately 6 weeks time!.. i feel very excited and at the same time incredibly overwhelmed by the prospect. i cry whenever i see a birth depicted on TV, in a movie or in a book - not because i feel frightened but because the creation of a gorgeous little totally dependent new life like that is hard to fathom and so beautiful. And becoming a mother lasts forever.

while sorting and clearing out some of our old junk ('nesting'), i came across this photo of me and my mum. i am so thankful for her and the example she has given me of fun, loving, patient, creative, committed and gracious mothering.

i love these old photos of mum and dad from back when they were starting a family (mum was 18!)

this weekend mum is speaking at a L'Abri conference about creativity and spirituality and her floral design business Wildflowers. I know she is very nervous but i also know she will be brilliant and I am really proud of her.

arrival of spring?

this weekend has been beautifully sunny and warm. it feels like spring has arrived. i just hope that the beautiful blossoms on the trees have not been lulled in to a false sense of security and will find themselves, as last year, frost-bitten and lives cut short in a week or so. it was lovely to have lunch outside - on our little concrete area outside our back door.

with the change in weather (and impending birth and new motherhood), i felt the urge fora change in hair-style so Sam took the clippers to my unusually (for me) long locks.

what a good hairdresser!
